We sat patiently through the scrolling credits, letting name after name wash over our eyeballs, for only a treat at the end: he post-credit sequence. And we weren’t disappointed. As the camera glances over the pager, we see it: the red and blue insignia with a white star at its centre, the mark of … Oh, wait
Warning: Major Spoilers Ahead. If you haven’t watched Infinity War yet, well this post isn’t for you. Read something else on the page.
Ok, now we can speak the heart out. The post-credit scenes give a major clue as to how Avengers 4 (Untitled) and the future of the MCU will play out.
After Thanos successfully eradicates half of all existence, achieving his grand plan to bring balance to the universe, we’re painfully forced to bear witness to some of our favourite heroes simply disappearing from existence: Black Panther, Spider-Man, Star-Lord.
But that leaves many MCU favourites with fates entirely unknown and the post-credits sequence brings in two more simply to deal them the death blow. We open in New York City, presumably moments after Thanos finally gets his hands on all the Infinity Stones and unleashes destruction.
Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) are heard discussing the search for Tony Stark, as Fury adds he’s been attempting to get into contact with Clint (Barton A.K.A. Hawkeye), before leaping out of their car as the world descends into chaos: cars crash into each other, helicopters fall out of the sky, as people start simply disappearing into thin air.
Maria is the first to go, as she looks at Nick with complete and utter disbelief. Before the same happens to Nick he manages to reach into his pocket and pull out a peculiar-looking pager; he disappears before he can utter “motherf**ker” and the pager falls to the ground.
As the camera glances over the pager, we see it: the red and blue insignia with a white star at its centre, the mark of one Captain Marvel.
We know Captain Marvel has her own movie coming next year, before the next Avengers film. And while we’re still not certain where she falls in the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline, we’re pretty sure the movie will focus on her origin story from the ’90s — andmakes it super likely she’ll appear in the next Avengers film.
What are Captain Marvel’s powers?
In the comics, she’s gone through some changes over the years, but the current version of Captain Marvel has these powers:
- Superhuman strength and durability
- Energy manipulation: She can shoot energy blasts (and lasers) from her hands.
- Energy Absorption: She can absorb energy, like lightning, and this absorption actually augments her other abilities, making her even more powerful.
Where did Captain Marvel get her powers?
In the comics, she got her powers from a Kree alien named Mar-vell, who was the original Captain Marvel. (Kree are the same race as Ronan from the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie.)
Captain Marvel is set for release on March 29, 2019. The next chapter in the MCU timeline is Ant-Man and the Wasp, coming July 18 of this year. And finally, the next Avengers movie arrives May 4, 2019.
